Name Sydney Reid Essays (830 words) - Education,
Name: Sydney Reid College ID: 0591992 Thomas Edison State University General AOJ-101 Section no.: Writing Assignment #1 Semester and year: May 2017 The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs' Bureau of Justice Statistics issued the results of a special survey administered to a nationally representative sample of agencies that participated in the 2008 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies. Approximately 3,000 general purpose agencies were sampled, including all agencies employing 100 or more full-time sworn officers and a systematic random sample of smaller agencies. The report shows that there were only 36% of the agencies who targeted applicants with previous law enforcement experience and a much smaller percentage of the agencies focused on a more diverse recruitment approach and were able to hire 17% military veterans, 16% multilingual, and 14% 4-year college graduates. The efforts are not enough to ensure a more diverse hiring procedure and there can be various creative strategies that can be implemented to promote diversity in the local police workforce. In an Executive Session Paper on Increasing Diversity in Police Departments (Kasdan, 2006), Kasdan suggests the following creative strategies to help in the recruitment and retention of a diverse police department workforce: Partnership and collaborations, outreach/community programs, reform the hiring process and long-term efforts in recruitment. 1. Partnership and Collaborations. Every community has some kind of workforce development agency that facilitates training programs to help provide employment to their citizens. The police force can partner with these agencies, provide training and help applicants pass the physical abilities and other tests. The police department can also partner with student researchers to learn more about how they can recruit and retain minority police officers. Launching a new recruitment campaign to focus on attracting women and minority candidates for police jobs is also an effective way of increasing diversity in the workforce. 2. Outreach/Community Programs. Police officers can conduct out-of-town recruitment in accordance to demographics analysis reports that show which areas they can find more potential recruits. In Atlanta, there has been a targeted recruitment of the Latino community by advertising the vacancies in Spanish newspapers, job fairs and through posters and flyers. 3. Reform the Hiring Process. One way to change or improve the hiring process is to conduct a case by case review of driving violations or other requirements that disqualify potential police officer applicants but may not be necessary in the job recruitment process. The police department can also evaluate its performance requirements and change them to encourage minority applicants or to remove those requirements that disproportionately affect them. 4. Long-term Efforts in Recruitment. The police department can conduct youth outreach programs to offer summer employment to minority high school students. This will also be a way of training them into police force in the future. They can also implement programs that provide athletic activities for youth from families and communities with low income or different race.Creative campaign, aggressive advertising, community involvement, partnership and collaboration -- they can greatly improve diversity in the recruitment and retention of local police officers.Furthermore, to assess if a police department is doing its best to promote diversity, they can consider answering the following: Recruit people from outside of the state as different demographics and job markets promote diversity of applicants Evaluate the factors affecting the failure of minority and female applicants to successfully get the job. Compare and evaluate the state's standards for psychometric exams or other requirements with other states and there may be standards higher in your state than in theirs. Implement a long-term strategy to help minority get the job by mentoring them while they are young and eventually encourage them to become a part of the police department. Fix negative perceptions that the minority thinks of the way recruitment is being conducted through proactive policing system that allows the police offers to build relationships with them in the field. Go out to find the applicants and start encouraging them while they are still young. Encourage them to train every summer so that it won't be difficult to successfully pass the actual training when they are in the right age. Provid e mentors to minority officers and emphasize a culture of supportive collaboration within the team members. Minority police

Operation management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Operation management - Essay Example Operation function is vital in every organization because of its core duty of being involved in production of both products and services (Michael 2003). Process management can also be defined in terms of management where the mangers receive more experience on managing various types of operations in an organization. Operational and process management is applicable in industries because every function in an industry requires a process for it to be accomplished. Process perspective in business The process perspective is crucial in the management of any business. The process perspective is used by organizations to develop a model where business is analyzed at various levels. Processes are modeled to appropriately serve the business purpose. It involves shaping the processes to ensure customersââ¬â¢ needs are satisfied (Michael 2003). Strategic impact in operations and process management Operations and process management can be very crucial in the success of a business in terms of reve nues, the capacity, investment and the cost incurred in the process of doing business. All the parameters that contribute a success or failure in business should all be under control for a business to be having stability and the ability to be determining its future. The operations function of a business should be laid down to enable a future orientation that will hold. Management of process Business objectives and the process are different and are focused in a certain way. Basically the operations of different businesses may be different thus the management for each of them would just be different according to their capacities. A process with very high capacity should be flexible enough to handle the challenges posed by the complexity of the system. While managing businesses of varied processes, the customerââ¬â¢s perception of the activities should be treated with the utmost sensitivity. Therefore managing the customerââ¬â¢s perception would be vital in realizing a proper pro cess is in place. A combination of various processes and low level of variety would result in low cost. In managing these activities, it is important to consider designing the operation, the processes and services, planning and delivery of the process. Also more important in consideration is the process of managing the performance. Operations Strategy A strategy formation has four major steps to follow; they include definition of the tasks, assessment of the competences, determination of the orders in terms of the winners and the qualifiers and the firm positioning. The priorities for competitive approach include the costing, consideration of the quality, the speed of implementing the process and the process flexibility. Reducing the cost of operations includes installation of automated machines which in turn improve delivery of activities in various processes. Basically such improvements are implemented in the inventory, and record-keeping. Quality is basically based on the custome rsââ¬â¢ satisfaction which implies that every employee is empowered to deliver good services to the customers and for the industries as the manufacturing, the goods produced are ought to be of high quality (Knapp 2010). This can be achieved a frequent check in through a report tracking in the organization. Each process may be evaluated in terms of its quality. Time of delivery, variety of products and services would be crucial in serving the customers interest and diversity. They will have the choice of

Events surrounding Royal Bank of Scotland acquisition of NatWest Dissertation
Events surrounding Royal Bank of Scotland acquisition of NatWest - Dissertation Example The analysis of the paper shows that the motives behind mergers and acquisitions of NatWest or other business consolidation across Europe are the synergies and various integrative benefits that can be derived in banking industry. Major impact of macroeconomic factors motivating such practices were domestic deregulation, lower interests rates leading to sliding interest income margin and rising growth. Moreover, the 1990s financial dominance was shifted from Eastern financial institutions to the Western banks and technological development especially in terms of IT, changes in corporate thinking and increasing importance of corporate governance practices and shareholder wealth creation were other major factors that motivated the banks to look for possible acquisitions. Therefore, costs reduction, revenue augmentation and NatWestââ¬â¢s wide presence attracted a much smaller banks like RBS to bid and acquire Britainââ¬â¢s one of the oldest banking institutions. The analysis of RBS annual reports provides valuable insight in to whether this has increased RBSââ¬â¢ shareholdersââ¬â¢ wealth. The results show that there have been more than expected revenues and costs savings in post acquisition period while the net interest income, total income, and EPS have all increased in absolute terms. However, the comparison of RBS and NatWest with the market returns shows that no value is created for the shareholders in post acquisition period. The reason could have been that RBS continued its acquisition spree without consideration of shareholders, which shows poor governance practices in RBS Group.... Chapter 1 1.1 Project Background & Introduction The expansion of world trade as evident from financial and economic globalisation has provided substantial benefits to the countries. Much of these benefits have been a result of the mergers and acquisition activities that has taken place around the world in every sector. Improvement in cost to income ratio is one of the major reasons for merger and acquisition. At the same time, acquisition has another broad aspect. This helps in increasing market share and reducing competition significantly, which enhance firmââ¬â¢s presence and bargaining power over not only consumers but also suppliers. Th is paper is a critical analysis of one of these acquisitions that took place between RBS and NatWest at the turn of 21st century in UK. This project is outlined in four sections. The first section provides the research aim and objectives. The second section is the literature review, which encompasses the definitions of merger and acquisition, background of NatWest and RBS, drivers of NatWest acquisition, structure of global banking industry, and the impetus for consolidation in general and in UK banking industry and finally, the impact such consolidation has had on the structure and efficiency of the merged banks. The third section is the critical evaluation of the theories in the light of the acquisitionââ¬â¢s effects on both the banks. And lastly, the fourth section concludes the paper. 1.2 Project

Chemical dependency Essay Group Structure: Type of group: This meeting was a ââ¬Å"Narcotics Anonymous Open Sharing Meetingâ⬠. This component, where anyone attending had the opportunity to share. There was no direct feedback from the other participants during the ââ¬Å"shareâ⬠, thus only one person spoke at any given time during that portion of the meeting. Organizational affiliation: Narcotics Anonymous as a group has no affiliation outside of Narcotics Anonymous. As a group they have no opinion on outside issues,â⬠including those of politics, science, or medicine, and do not endorse any outside organization or institution. The fellowship does not promote itself, but rather attracts new members through public information and outreach. Narcotics Anonymous groups and areas supply outside organizations with factual information regarding the Narcotics Anonymous program, and individual members may carry the Narcotics Anonymous message to hospitals and institutions, such as treatment centers and jails. Narcotics Anonymous as a group base their public relations policy on attraction rather than promotion. Physical environment: This meeting was held in the recreation room in the basement of a church. There was an oblong table at the head of the two rows of chairs placed in a 360 degree circle. Participants: There were roughly 40-50 participants ranging in age from mid teens to late 50ââ¬â¢s. There were only 5 females in attendance. This groupââ¬â¢s ethnicity was about 85% Caucasian, 10% African American and 5% Latino. Leadership structure: In different areas the work is divided differently, and the particular jobs are sometimes called different names. At this particular meeting the leadership structure was as follows, ranking from top to bottom in hierarchy. Chairperson, Co-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and Group service representative (GSR). Process: What the group does for a personââ¬â¢s first visit? First time visitors and newcomers to this meeting were asked to introduce themselves by first name only. How membersââ¬â¢ contribute to the groupââ¬â¢s leadership? Members who attend the same meeting on a regular basis to establish a recovery network and reliable routine understand this to be their ââ¬Å"Home Groupâ⬠. These group members are able to participate in the groupââ¬â¢s business, and play an important role in deciding how the structure, leadership and the groupââ¬â¢s meetings will be conducted. Each member has a vote in this process and the majority vote rules. Activities that occurred during the meeting. There were no physical activities during this meeting but certain individuals read inserts from the ââ¬Å"Basic Text Bookâ⬠of Narcotics Anonymous pertaining to that weekââ¬â¢s format and agenda. Address the following questions: How did the group begin? The group began by the Chairperson knocking on the table to gain every ones attention, then announcing them self, followed by stating the name of this group (Dead Man Walking) then reciting the Serenity Prayer. How was the purpose of the meeting communicated? The purpose of the meeting was indicated by preamble which was read by the Chairperson also by the reading of the secretaryââ¬â¢s report, which was read by the C-Chairperson, this stated the purpose of the meeting and the rules in which the participants were required to oblige by. How was the meetingââ¬â¢s agenda established? The agenda varies in whatever way seems to best suit the personality of the group and the needs of the addicts in the community. This meetingââ¬â¢s agenda and format was established by the governing members (from the Home Group) and varies from week to week but was mostly based on the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous. Techniques used to encourage people to participate. It was announced to all those attending the meeting that participation was optional. What extent were these techniques effective. There was no pressure on anyone which made the atmosphere very comfortable. What are participantsââ¬â¢ responsibilities for the meeting process? Anonymity of the groupââ¬â¢s participants and process were the main responsibilities from all those attending and keeping the sharing time between 3-5 minutes and not interrupting the person who was talking. How were these responsibilities explained? These responsibilities were explained to the group in detail during the reading of the secretaryââ¬â¢s report. How did the group demonstrate interest, acceptance, etc. in those attending? The participants showed interest by paying close attention to the individual who was sharing and when those who shared finished, everyone in the group (at one time) thanked that person for sharing their story. What emotions were observed? There were a couple of times when an individual who was telling their story began to cry. Other times there was some laughter from the group when certain individuals identified their own story with the one the person was sharing. How did the participants respond to expressions of these emotions? The participants expressions showed true concern and empathy for those who were sharing their experience, strength and hope. Were there any decisions made for future events or meetings? It was stated in the secretaryââ¬â¢s report that all meeting events and decisions are discussed and made during the groupââ¬â¢s monthly business meeting. The business meeting for this group is held on the second Saturday of the month. Describe any observation of any therapeutic factors. The therapeutic value of one addict helping another gave each participant the feeling of acceptance and familiarity. There were a lot of similarities between the structure of an Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meeting. A major difference I witness at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting from the Narcotics Anonymous meeting was, at the Narcotics Anonymous Meeting it was suggested that those who was sharing not to acknowledge or mention there drug use. At the Narcotics Anonymous meeting it was clearly stated that ââ¬Å"Narcotics Anonymous does not distinguish a difference between substances, they are all inclusive, ââ¬Å"Alcohol is a drugâ⬠. It was also stated at the Narcotics Anonymous meeting that anyone from the other fellowship (Alcoholics Anonymous) was accepted at this and all Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

When a solute is dissolved in a liquid, the temperature at which that liquid freezes decreases, because the molecules of the solute become attached to the water molecules, making it more difficult for the water to form its crystaline shape and form into ice. This process is called Freezing Point Depression. In this experiment, you will be determining which of five salts most affects the Freezing Point of water. à à à à à Each salt will have a concentration of one mole. A mole is the atomic weight of the compound multiplied by one gram, in 1000 ml of water. Since you will be using only 100 ml of water each time, then you must divide the atomic weight by 10 before multiplying it by one gram. You will be using a computer-interfaced Temperature Probe to monitor how much each salt decreases the freezing temperature of water, and a graph of your results will be plotted using the computer. *PURPOSE: To learn which type of salt lowers the Freezing Point of water the greatest amount. *PROBLEM: Which type of salt lowers the Freezing Point of water to the lowest point? à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à Blank 2 *HYPOTHESIS: The KCl will lower the waterââ¬â¢s Freezing Point the most, because Potassium has the lowest ionization energy out of the five metals that are bonded with Chlorine, and perhaps it will bond more easily with the water molecules, keeping it from freezing. *MATERIALS: à à à à à à à à à à *Power Macintosh or Windows PCà à à à à *10-ml graduated cylinder à à à à à à à à à à *Vernier computer interfaceà à à à à à à à à à *ice à à à à à à à à à à *LoggerProà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *salt à à à à à à à à à à *Vernier Temperature Probeà à à à à à à à à à *stirring rod à à à à à à à à à à *ring standà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *100 ml of 1M calcium chloride à à à à à à à à à à *utility clampà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *100 ml of 1M magnesium chloride à à à à à à à à à à *one test tubeà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *100 ml of 1M sodium chloride à à à à à à à à à à *600-ml beakerà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *100 ml of 1M potassium chloride à à à à à à à à à à *waterà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *100 ml of 1M lithium chloride à à à à à à à à à à *triple-beam balanceà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à *weighing dish *PROCEDURES: 1. The Role of Teachers as Nation Builders
The role of teachers in the building of a nation can not be ignored. It is they who influence the immature minds of the youth and tries to mould the living stuff into various forms. It is they on who depends the future of the nation. Hence, they are the most important part of the society. In the past, teachers were considered respectable figures even by the kings and the emperors, because only teachers were there to guide and advice them in hours of crisis. They were the true benefactors of the society. With the change of time they lost their dignity to some extent. Still, they are considered the backbone of a nation, and a society. Teachers are the real guide of the students. With their deep knowledge of the subject and teaching technique they can impart valuable information to the students. They can guide them towards noble deeds, studies, health, and cleanliness and above ail the moral values of life. All these qualities enable a child to grow into an ideal citizen of his/her natio n. Teachers are considered the noblest section of the society. This increases their responsibility towards nation and the students to a great extent; they must be dedicated to the service of the students. Their own actions and high ideas about life can easily shape the young minds into good personalities and responsible citizens of tomorrow. They are a guiding light for students throughout their lives. The importance of the role of the teachers as an agent of change, promoting understanding and tolerance has become more obvious today. This places enormous responsibilites on teachers who participate in the moulding of the character and minds of the new generation. Now days, the whole scenario has been changed. Teachers and parents are engaged in blaming each other. Parents are displeased with them because their sons and daughters do not do well in the examination. Teachers blame the parents that they do not pay much attention on their wards due to lack of time. Even we do not find any accord between the teachers and the students. The overall result is that the students have become aggressive, bold and daring- They are less concerned with their studies and think more about other activities. The teachers become helpless at this juncture. This leads to dissatisfaction and frustration among them. They do not get proper respect from the students. In addition to this, the teachers are not paid highly and regularly. This makes their situation miserable. It is necessary to improve the conditions of the teachers. Only then they will continue their job with full vigour and zeal. Only then they will discharge their duty towards the students as well as the nation in true sense of the term. Only then their potentialities will shine in the new generation, the real hope of the nation.
